Before you come to Israel, print out this helpful Grocery Shopping Assistant. (The link is a PDF stored as a google document.  Sarah received  a shorter version, along with the link, in a newsletter from the US Embassy in Tel Aviv.)  It will help you, the Hebrew illiterate, feel a little bit less like an idiot on your first day in a strange land, prevent you from serving your son a bowlful of sour cream and calling it “yogurt”, and from trying to put together a quick spaghetti dinner using unseasoned tomato puree, and let you know that yes, there is cream cheese available for your bagel.

If you don’t have a car right away (or at all), it is also useful to know that most grocery stores will deliver (mishloach). You have to tell the cashier at check-out and there is a small fee.
